They say espadrilles have been around for more than 8 centuries. Thanks to creative designers, this summer shoe has been able to reinvent itself without aging. At Payote, we follow suit. We embrace creativity by presenting this men's summer shoe in new styles, with bold patterns and a variety of materials. That's how we avoid uniformity ! Every year, we proudly unveil a large collection of original patterned espadrilles. The canvases are fanciful and feature contemporary patterns. Tropical-printed espadrilles, espadrilles with funny characters or juicy pineapples, there is a pattern for everyone. Indeed, we wanted to offer as many prints as styles. The colors are also very diverse : our range goes from vivid reds to deep blues, from emerald greens to warm orange hues. So you imagine there will be a color for each of your mood. Emblematic of casual chic, this collection of printed models is fully in line with our DNA. It reflects our ambition as a brand : giving the traditional espadrille a fresh new look.

Let's talk technical a little bit ! You may not know it, but it is very complicated to print beautiful designs on a classic cotton canvas espadrille. The ink may look blurry in some areas and the details are not correctly rendered. For the sake of quality, we have therefore chosen to print our designs on a fine-quality polyester canvas. The printing is done with vegetable ink and the result is surprising : every detail is rendered with precision. This polyester canvas is then lined with a light and breathable cotton canvas. We have done a lot of trials and we have found this combo to be the most comfortable.

 And to make sure that every man finds the perfect shoe we have also created a collection of plain espadrilles for men. They are the perfect match for more polished and elegant outfits.

Not only do we care about the designs of our products but we also make sure that their manufacturing is aligned with our values. Since the creation of the brand, we have worked with a family workshop located in Mauléon, in the heart of the Basque Country. This small town brings together the last artisans specializing in espadrilles. Thanks to their know-how, we are able to offer you men's espadrilles made in France with throughtfullness and care.

How can we accurately illustrate the mastery of our partner workshop? One element can demonstrate this in particular: the specifications which govern the manufacturing process. Indeed, it is a reflection of all the technique and care that goes into each step. Made up of 14 very precise steps, it gives all our models the benefits of the techniques specific to Basque artisans. In addition to this local manufacturing , we are committed to respecting a key aspect of the DNA of Made in France: the promotion of employees. Unlike mass-produced products on the other side of the world, our products are made by passionate craftsmen governed by the French labor code. This guarantees them rights, including the right to fair remuneration. This is why, in this alignment, we offer our products at so-called “fair” prices.

Employees benefit from a secure working environment and their well-being is considered. Beyond the supervision of employees, Made in France is also evolving to be more respectful of the environment. And we also act in this sense: our materials are chosen in an approach that is more respectful of the planet. We place particular emphasis on recycled and reused materials. Our classic cotton models have, for example, a recycled cotton canvas. Other models are made of plastic thread from marine waste and we also have a canvas made of grape marc leather. For the insole , we deliberately chose to keep the braided jute sole , typical of the artisanal espadrille . This natural material gives it comfort and flexibility while being biodegradable. The outsole, meanwhile, is made of recycled rubber, making the sneaker robust and durable. As you will have understood, we ensure that our products are as consistent as possible with our ecological ambitions.

Combining tradition and modernity

Our creativity has led us to shake up the codes with new products adapted to everyone's needs. You will therefore find bold and graphic collections that fully embrace themselves. Thus, everyone can assert themselves through an authentic product in their image. But then why are we talking to you about tradition combined with modernity? In fact, we have chosen to keep the traditional cut of the Basque espadrille.

It is completely rounded and can be recognized by the small fold of the “slipper” at the end of the foot. On the other hand, we obviously find the braided rope sole, typical of this artisanal product. This sole is flat, without any heel, and takes the shape of traditional espadrilles molds. Furthermore, our models take a step into modernity: the rope sole is lined with a layer of rubber to give it more durability. So, you can put on your pair both at the beach and in town without any risk of premature wear. Finally, we sew the upper to the sole using a reinforced nylon thread seam.
